What Is an AI BDC at a Car Dealership? What It Does and What It Can't

An AI is software that makes or answers a car dealership's routine calls with an AI voice, often handles texts too, and passes the conversations that need a person to the store's BDC, sales or service team. It works beside a BDC, and it doesn't run one. The useful question for a is which calls to hand it, which calls stay with your people, and what has to be in place before it dials anyone, starting with consent your counsel has checked. A virtual BDC usually means an outsourced team of people working remotely. An AI BDC is software.

What is a BDC at a car dealership?

stands for business development center. It is the team, sometimes a single person, whose job is to turn contacts into appointments: internet leads into showroom visits, and service customers into booked .

On the sales side, BDC reps answer internet leads, call people who visited and left without buying, confirm appointments, and chase the customer who went quiet after a test drive. On the service side, they book appointments, remind customers about recalls and maintenance, confirm the next day's schedule, and often make the check-in call after the RO closes.

A BDC manager runs that team: sets the call lists, listens to calls, coaches, reports appointment and show numbers to the or service director, and decides what gets logged in the and how.

The job is hard for reasons every knows. The lists never end and leads arrive at night and on Sundays. The rep who is good on the phone gets pulled onto the floor or promoted out. The customer who is upset or close to a deal needs judgment that a script can't supply. We think software in the BDC should give your reps time back for those calls.

Takeaway

List the call types that fill your BDC's day, and you have the brief for any vendor.

What an AI BDC actually does on a call

Products vary, and many follow this loop.

  1. It places or answers the call. For outbound, it works from a list the store sets: service customers whose just closed, unsold showroom visitors, appointments for tomorrow. For inbound, it picks up when the line is set to route to it. Before the store points it at any customer list, check consent with your counsel.
  2. It says it's an AI assistant. At the start of the conversation, the customer should hear plainly that they are talking to an automated assistant calling for the dealership. If a vendor can't show you that line in a sample recording, treat that as a warning.
  3. It asks and listens. It asks the questions the store has approved, such as whether the car was ready when promised, whether anything is still bothering the customer, or whether Tuesday morning works.
  4. It logs what it heard. Answers, opt-outs and requests go into the or fields the store chooses, where the integration supports writing back, so a manager can read the result without listening to the recording.
  5. It escalates. When the customer asks for a person, says they're unhappy, raises a problem with the car, or wants to talk price, the assistant should stop and route the conversation to a named person at the store, with a note on what was said.

It should not negotiate, promise a price or a discount, argue, or keep going after someone says stop. Write those limits down with the vendor before go-live.

Takeaway

Ask each vendor for a sample call that shows the disclosure line and a handoff to a person.

Who makes which call

Each row is a call type your already handles, and your counsel answers the consent question in the last column.

How to read it: find a call type your BDC makes today and read across to who should take it.

Mark each row for your store, and you'll know which calls a vendor can quote on.

Each side has work it suits.

Where your reps are the right choice

Where software fits

Move the routine calls off your reps' lists so they spend their time on the calls that decide whether the store keeps a customer or closes a deal.

What has to be in place before an AI makes any call

This is not legal advice, and the rules on automated and AI calls are for your counsel to apply to your store. Our TCPA explainer covers the rules in plain words.

If any of these is missing, fix it before any campaign goes out.

Takeaway

Name the escalation owner and their cover before you sign, so a Saturday handoff still reaches someone.

How much does an AI BDC cost?

Get each quote in writing with what counts as a call, so vendors compare on the same terms.

Questions to ask any AI BDC vendor

Take this list into every demo.

  1. Does the assistant say it's an AI at the start of every call?
  2. How is an opt-out captured on the call, and how does it get back to your and do-not-call list?
  3. Does it check a customer's consent record before every call, and what does it do if the record is missing?
  4. What does it do when the customer asks for a person?
  5. Who gets escalations, how are they notified, and what happens if nobody acts?
  6. Are calls recorded, and what notice does the customer hear?
  7. Which systems does it read from and write to (CRM, , scheduler), and which fields?
  8. Who owns the call data and recordings, and where are they stored?
  9. What does it cost, and exactly how is it billed?
  10. What can it say and not say? Can it quote prices, discounts or trade values, and who controls that?
  11. Which languages does it handle?
  12. How is its caller ID managed, and what does the store's number show on a customer's phone?

If you already have scripts your uses for service check-ins, compare them with the vendor's. Our service follow-up call scripts are a starting point.

Takeaway

Send the list before the demo, and spend the demo on the gaps in the answers.

Where Lokam fits

Peace of mind: see each call and which issues are still open. Lokam is post-visit follow-up for US franchise dealerships. Lokam doesn't replace your survey, your or your people.

Your store uses Lokam's AI assistant for two kinds of calls: service follow-up and follow-up with unsold showroom visitors. On each call, the AI assistant speaks for your dealership and says it is a virtual assistant and that the line is recorded, and the customer can tell it to stop. When a customer wants to talk to someone, the AI assistant passes the request to your team, who call back. Consent to contact your customers is your dealership's. Lokam doesn't collect or decide it. The plain facts about Lokam are on its facts page. To see how it would work with your , book a demo.

FAQ

What does mean in a dealership?
BDC means business development center: the team that turns leads and service customers into appointments. In sales, reps answer internet leads, follow up with unsold visitors and confirm appointments. In service, they book appointments, send reminders and often make the check-in call after an .

What is a BDC manager?
A BDC manager runs the BDC team. They build the call lists, listen to and coach calls, decide what gets logged in the , and report appointments and shows to the or service director. In an AI-assisted BDC, they also own the scripts, the escalation rules and the review of what the assistant logged.

How many calls should a BDC agent make in a day?
There's no right number to copy from another store. Set it from your own work: how many leads, unsold visitors and service follow-ups come in each day, and how long a real conversation takes. Then judge the calls by appointments set and kept. If your reps can't work the whole list well, that's the case for taking routine calls off it, once your counsel has checked consent.

How are car dealerships using AI?
Coordinating customer follow-up is tied for the top use of AI among dealers, at 40% (Cox Automotive AI in Auto Retail Tracker, Q2 2026). 69% of dealers expected AI to grow sales and revenue; among dealers using AI, 22% say it has (Cox Automotive, Q2 2026). Those figures are what dealers reported in a survey about use and expectations.

Can AI replace a BDC?
No. An AI assistant can take routine calls, confirmations and logging off your reps' lists, once your counsel has checked consent for each kind of call. Negotiation, upset customers, long-running deals and relationship calls need a person, and a well-run setup hands those back to your team right away.

Is it legal to use AI voice calls to follow up with customers?
That's a question for your counsel, because the answer depends on the type of call, what the customer agreed to and where your store operates. The section above lists what to have in place before any automated call, and our TCPA explainer covers the rules in plain words.

How much does an AI BDC cost?
It depends on the vendor and the pricing model: per rooftop, per call or minute, or per seat. Compare setup fees, integration costs, contract length and who maintains the scripts, and get the billing model in writing.

Before you go
